GOLDEN
TRIANGLE - Hilltribes and Opium.
|
The
region where Thailand, Burma and Laos meet has been called the
golden triangle and is notorious for the Opium-trade and obscure
guerilla groups. In reality it is one of the most beautiful
and interesting places in the world. It |
|
has the largest variety of ethnic minorities in the world with
hundreds of different dialects and languages. Most of the inhabitants
practice various forms of animism, sometimes mixed with Buddhism.
A lot of the population are or used to be nomadic, slash and
burn farmers coming from south of China, originally all the
way from Tibet. Some tribes consist of only a few hundred while
others like Akha, Hmong or Yao spread out over several countries
and count several hundred thousand. |
