RUNNING OF THE BULLS-San Fermin festival
|
Every year on the 6th of July the Spanish town of
Pamplona erupts in a week long drunken fiesta.
What originally started as homage to the saint San
Fermin has evolved into one of the wildest parties
on the planet. Writer Ernest Hemingway brought world
wide attention to the festival, describing the unique
and dangerous tradition of running with the bulls.
Although the fiesta has lots of other events it's the
Bull Run, or the "Encierro", which brings crowds from
all over the world. In the early morning hours during
the fiesta, a group of fighting bulls is herded through
the old town. Thousands of runners, many still drunk
after a night of partying, are running in front of
the bulls. In the chaos they are as likely to be
trampled by other runners as by bulls. The run ends
as the bulls reach the bullfighting arena, where the
bulls are killed the same night.
