DARRA
- Guns and drugs.
Since
colonial rule the North Western Frontier Province in Pakistan
has enjoyed virtual freedom from any interference by the central
government. Inhabited by Pathan tribesmen and Afghan refugees
this province was also the birth-place of the Taliban movement.
No police are allowed to enter the area and the laws are made
by the tribal leader. Free from outside control, drug and gun
production has become the main stay of the local economy. During
the 80's it became a staging area for the Afghan guerillas,
who brought captured Russian guns there to have them repaired
or copied. In the small town of Darra copies of Russian AK-47's
and RPG's can be bought for a bargain. The sounds of gunfire
on the streets are no battles, it's simply customers checking
out the goods in the weapons bazaar.
