LA CORRIDA-Death in the afternoon
|
Bullfighting
is one the most well known Spanish traditions and at the same
time the most controversial. On any given summer Sunday afternoon
man and beast are pitted against each other in the local Plaza
de Toro. Six specially bred fighting bulls called Toro Bravos
are up against three Toreros, who take turns in showing their
skill and bravery with the cape and sword before finally killing
the bull. The event is highly ritualized and divided in three
acts. At first the assistants of the Torero are testing the
reactions of the bulls to asses its movements and aggressiveness.
This is followed by the Picadors on horseback that with a lance
pierce the back of the bull to make it safer for the Torero
to make the final kill. Next the Banderillos approach on foot
attaching brightly colored short spears. In the third act the
Torero is judged for the valor and style of his maneuvers and
the final killing. |
