Situated
in the very north of India in the troubled state of Kashmir
lies Ladakh, sometimes called "little Tibet". The
inhabitants are of Tibetan origin or refugees from Tibet. Spared
the ravages of the Cultural Revolution and Chinese |

occupation in neighboring Tibet, many visitors experience a
stronger Tibetan culture here than in Tibet itself. Due to the
high altitude and inaccessible roads Ladakh is virtually sealed
off during the winter months. So far the civil war in the Muslim
part of Kashmir has not spread to the mainly Buddhist Ladakh
but frequently tempers flare between the different ethnic groups. |
