HOLY WEEK-Semana Santa in Sevilla
|
Holy week or Semana Santa is the week before Easter Sunday.
Throughout Latin countries the passion of Christ is commemorated
with processions and rituals. The most extravagant celebrations
take place in Sevilla in the south of Spain. Some 57 Brotherhoods,
or Hermanidades, parade through town carrying giant floats and statues
of Christ and Virgin Mary. The floats, weighing up to 2000 kg are
carried on the shoulders of members of the Hermanidad called Costaleros.
Accompanying the floats are the Nazarenos, hooded penitents who walk
barefoot for miles, sometimes carrying heavy wooden crosses.
A procession can have several thousand penitents, who cover their
faces to keep their identity secret. Women dressed in black in
mourning of the death of Christ line the procession route Along the
way singers perform mournful Saetas from balconies as the processions
pass by.
