NORTHERN
LAOS.
|
Land
locked and mountainous, the northern part of Laos used to be
one of the most remote corners of Asia. The lack of roads, different
languages and civil war also added to the isolation. During
the second Indochina conflict the infamous Ho Chi Min Trail
went through Laos, |
and it received the dubious honor of having most explosives
dropped per capita in the history of warfare. Over 30 years
later UXO (unexploded ordnance) remains a major obstacle for
development in Laos. However, for a few years the northern part
of the country has opened up to outsiders as much as the infrastructure
allows it. This beautiful region is the home to countless ethnic
groups like the Mlabri, counting just a few hundred, and the
Hmomg with numbers of over 200.000. Other major minority groups
include Tai Dam, Akha, Yao, Lahu, Lisu, Lanten.
